Trebouxia maresiae sp. nov.

Phyllosiphon duini sp. nov. (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta), a species isolated from a corticolous phototrophic biofilm

The Watanabea clade of the Trebouxiophyceae includes unicellular coccoid green microalgae that mostly thrive in subaerial microhabitats. Recently, a number of new genera and species were described on the basis of the DNA sequence data and morphological observations. The peculiar genus Phyllosiphon, which forms a monophyletic clade within the Watanabea clade, is characterized by forming siphonou...

Xylochloris irregularis gen. et sp. nov. (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta), a novel subaerial coccoid green alga

The phylogenetic diversity of subaerial coccoid green algae remains still poorly explored. We characterised in detail two unicellular green algae found on tropical trees in Singapore. Light microscopy revealed morphological identity of these two strains. Depending on the age of cultures, the cells were spherical to cylindrical, and ranged in size from 13.5 to 20.5 mm. Each cell contained a pyre...

Pathogenesis of Helicosporidium sp. (Chlorophyta: Trebouxiophyceae) in susceptible noctuid larvae.

Helicosporidium sp. is a unique, achlorophyllous green alga that has been reported to infect various insect orders, including Lepidoptera, Diptera, and Coleoptera. The infectious cyst stage is ingested by the host, ruptures in the midgut lumen, and releases a filamentous cell. Histopathological examinations using larvae of a susceptible noctuid host, Spodoptera exigua, showed both cysts and fil...

Unraveling the Photoprotective Response of Lichenized and Free-Living Green Algae (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) to Photochilling Stress

Lichens and free-living terrestrial algae are widespread across many habitats and develop successfully in ecosystems where a cold winter limits survival. With the goal of comparing photoprotective responses in free-living and lichenized algae, the physiological responses to chilling and photochilling conditions were studied in three lichens and their isolated algal photobionts together as well ...

Kalinella bambusicola gen. et sp. nov. (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta), a novel coccoid Chlorella-like subaerial alga from Southeast Asiapre_534 159..169

The traditional green algal genus Chlorella, which comprised coccoid algae surrounded by a smooth cell wall and reproducing solely by autosporulation, has proved to be polyphyletic and extremely diverse in phylogenetic terms. We studied a new subaerial Chlorella-like strain CAUP H7901 and morphological, ultrastructural, and molecular phylogenetic investigations indicated that it represents a ne...
